KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In a supervisory capacity is responsible for (a) an important segment of the engineering program of an organization with extensive and diversified engineering requirements, or (b) the entire engineering program of an organization when it is more limited in scope. The overall engineering program contains critical problems the solution of which requires major technological advances and opens the way for extensive related development. The extents of his/her responsibilities generally require several subordinate organizational segments or teams. Recommends facilities, personnel, and funds required to carry out programs that are directly related with and directed towards fulfillment of overall organizational objectives.
- As an individual researcher and consultant is a recognized leader and authority in the organization in a broad area of specialization or in a narrow but intensely specialized field. Selects research problems to further the organization's objectives. Conceives and plans investigations of broad areas of considerable novelty and importance for which engineering precedents are lacking in areas critical to the overall engineering program. Is consulted extensively by associates and others with a high degree of reliance placed on his/her scientific interpretations and advice. Typically, will have contributed inventions, new designs, or techniques that are regarded as major advances in the field.
- For higher education faculty positions, typical duties include research, publication of findings, classroom instruction, student advising, serving on governance committees, and serving on doctoral review committees.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS and QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master degree or higher in Physics or optical engineering;
- More than 10 years experience in optical design of micro-optical assemblies/system;
- Strong problem-solving skills from free space optics modeling/simulation to actual design implementation/realization and design optimization
- Experienced with analyzing design tolerance/tradeoffs for DFx;
- Hand-on experience with assembly, alignment and testing of micro-optical systems;
- Experienced with optical fibers and optical fiber pigtailed devices;
- Competent team player, capable of working with cross-functional teams including mechanics, electronics, firmware/software etc.
- Must be capable of leading a small team of engineers in a multi-discipline team and liaising with all other disciplines
- Must be capable of providing project requirements and working to those project restraints and providing accurate feedback to the Project Manager.
- Must also be able to demonstrate the ability to liaise with the customer at all levels and with partners and suppliers.
- Staff at this level would normally be expected to perform work involving considerable independence in approach, demanding originality, ingenuity and judgement
- Duties are assigned in terms of broad objectives and reviewed for policy, soundness of approach, accomplishment and effectiveness
- The individual will make technical decisions not usually subject to review and will determine courses of action necessary to expedite accomplishment of projects
- In turn they are expected to carry out independent technical assessment of other project's designs
- The principal engineer will work as a key member of a multidisciplinary team including other professional engineers and will plan, assign, review, check and approve the work of these technical staff
- A proactive and flexible attitude is essential for this role
- Close contact and liaison with customers and suppliers will often be required.
